I MENTIONED THE “ONE-DROP RULE” EARLIER TODAY, and Ryan Garcia sent this law review article on the Akaka Bill and how it implements the one-drop rule for native Hawaiians. “The question is how much ethnic Hawaiian blood should special legislation for ethnic Hawaiians require. That the vast majority – ninety percent – of ethnic Hawaiians are comprised of less than fifty percent ethnic Hawaiian blood makes this question particularly pertinent. . . . Nor is cultural orientation or identification what special legislation for ethnic Hawaiians requires. Blood is at issue here because blood determines and denies eligibility for ethnic entitlement programs.”

LAW AND BIOSCIENCES DAILY DIGEST is a new blog about, er, law and biosciences, with a particular emphasis on neuroscience, by Vanderbilt lawprof Nita Farahany. Looks quite interesting.

WELL, SINCE THE SAUDIS ARE RUNNING OUT OF OIL, THIS IS A GOOD TIME: New drilling method opens vast oil fields in US. “A new drilling technique is opening up vast fields of previously out-of-reach oil in the western United States, helping reverse a two-decade decline in domestic production of crude. Companies are investing billions of dollars to get at oil deposits scattered across North Dakota, Colorado, Texas and California. By 2015, oil executives and analysts say, the new fields could yield as much as 2 million barrels of oil a day — more than the entire Gulf of Mexico produces now.”

TENNESSEE STATE REP. JULIA HURLEY CREDITS HER WORK AT HOOTERS for her political success. Well, our political class would be more knowledgeable if more of its members had waited tables. Helen and I interviewed her when we were subbing for a local talk-radio host shortly before the election. She came across as smart and genuine. And she knocked off the multi-term Democratic incumbent who was behind the state’s Amazon Tax bill, so what’s not to like?

Morning Joe briefly mentioned this story but Mika the Hun refused to read it. So i had to Google it.

Mainstream media females, like Mika Brzezinski, absolutely hate attractive Republican women. Of course the fact that she chose not to have an abortion at age 15 is another reason they resent her. Representative Hurley has a heck of a story, it just doesn’t fit the narrative.

And it’s narrative uber alles for these people.

PROFESSOR JACOBSON looks at some known unknowns. Of course, it’s the unknown-unknowns that really get you.

LOW-TECH STOVE saves lives in Darfur. “The goal was to make a wood-burning stove that would use just a fraction of the fuel consumed by the open fires typically employed for cooking in Darfur. Each Berkeley-Darfur Stove is approximately 1 foot tall, and weighs 12 pounds. . . . These women report saving an average of approximately $1 per day in firewood expenses: A $20 stove saves a Darfuri woman more than $300 per year, or $1500 over the stove’s five-year life span. In a place where the average income is less than $5 a day (and most of this comes in the form of international aid), the impact of the stove is striking.”

WELL, THEY’D BETTER:

Faced with a revolt on the right, House Republicans began sketching out more than $40 billion in specific spending cuts Wednesday but may be forced to double their bets with a further across-the-board reduction to appease tea party supporters.

I just taped a segment on Hugh Hewitt’s show about this, and said that Republican members who don’t step up and make the cuts will probably face primary challengers. Mickey Kaus — who was also on — agreed with me that an across-the-board cut of, say, 5% or more, would probably be easier to get through than specific cuts, and also save more money. If Senate Democrats want to vote against that, let ’em. There can’t be many voters who really think that government departments can’t survive a 5% cut.

READER ADAM EVANS SENDS AN AMAZON SIMPSONS TIP: “Lightning Deal right now on what’s called the Ultimate Episode Guide for seasons 1 – 20. I wonder if the McBain mini-movie is discussed.” Heh. I don’t know. I kinda lost interest around season 9, but I guess real Simpsons geeks will be excited.

AT AMAZON, markdowns on laptops from Toshiba and Samsung. Also, Asus.
