THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED THIS WEEKEND, WHILE YOU WERE OUT, YOU KNOW, HAVING A LIFE OR SOMETHING:

Revolt of the Greek tax slaves. Don’t think this couldn’t happen here.

Harvard / Tea Party conference on Constitutional Conventions. Agenda here. News reports here and here. Attacked by communists (really!) here.

Distraction: The Buffett Tax Gambit.

Why Your State University Doesn’t Want You.

Poll: Majority Rates Obama “Same As” or “Worse Than” George W. Bush.

Five Myths About Millionaires.

Is Television Finally Portraying Men In A Better Light?

Solyndra: The Green Enron?

Remedial reading for Elizabeth Warren.

JOHN HINDERAKER: DISTRACTIONS. “If the 2012 election is run on the issues, the GOP will win in a landslide. The Left’s strategy for avoiding this outcome is to create as many distractions as possible.” So Republicans shouldn’t take the bait, right?

MICKEY KAUS: Rick Perry’s Big Mistake:

It’s always about respect. Telling voters who worry about illegal immgration that they don’t “have a heart” is dissing, not disagreeing. If Rick Perry had said “I’m sorry, I understand the arguments against it but I just don’t have the heart to tell those kids ‘no,’ and I don’t think we should do that as a society. There’s a place for compassion,” I don’t think his debate remark would have stirred up nearly as much resentment, though substantively it would have amounted to the same thing. . . . Perry may have phrased it the way he did because he doesn’t see his tuition stand as a compassionate exception to an otherwise rigorous system of border enforcement. He sees it as part of a full-throated, emotional ethnic pander that will to help him in the general election. Too bad he might not get there. …

Much more at the link.

UPDATE: Reader Frank Hujber writes: “Yeah but if he uses that word ‘compassion,’ he’s going to sound WAY too much like G.W. Bush for the tastes of any conservative.”

FEET OF CLAY: Obama asks CBC for Biblical faith in his agenda. “President Obama made an appeal to the religious faith of black voters at a Congressional Black Caucus rally, likening Biblical prophets who had faith in God — and so refused to worship an idol — to the black voters who ‘keep the faith’ by supporting him and his policies – and, he hopes, his reelection campaign.” Uh huh.

LEADERSHIP: Pelosi and Reid at odds with Obama over free trade deals. “Throughout the summer, Obama has been making the case that the trade accords with Colombia, South Korea and Panama will help the ailing economy by creating jobs. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) disagree.”

As is usually the case in the unfortunately-rare events where Obama doesn’t just let Reid and Pelosi do what they want, Obama is right here. Given his much-diminished clout these days — diminished in part because of the damage done by letting Reid and Pelosi do what they wanted with ObamaCare and the stimulus — I don’t know how much he’ll be able to accomplish.

TIM CAVANAUGH: Wishing Will Not Make Solyndra Go Away. “As the disappearance of half a billion taxpayer dollars in the Solyndra bankruptcy continues to draw public outrage and bipartisan congressional attention, deniers are pretending they can’t see the basic outlines of the story. . . . The unpredictable collapse of silicon prices is a fairly recent effort at Solyndra denial. It is no more persuasive than previous attempts to blame Bush and blame The Chinese. But at least it’s an effort. Deniers like Nocera and Robertson aren’t even trying.”

SHOULD PARDONED FELONS have their gun rights restored? “I voted YES in part because I suspect a non-violent offender who has secured a pardon is probably less dangerous and less likely to misuse a gun than an average citizen.”
