SLOW: Pentagon Red Tape Delayed Iraq’s Life-Saving Lasers. “As early as the spring of 2006, the Pentagon admits, an inexpensive bit of off-the-shelf technology could have given U.S. Marines at their checkpoints in western Iraq a better way of warning off approaching drivers. But the tech — a nonlethal laser gun that ‘dazzles’ drivers and forces them off the road — ran afoul of the Marines’ weapon-developing bureaucracy.”

THE HILL: LAWMAKERS URGE F.C.C. TO INVESTIGATE GOOGLE. “Google last year said its Street View cars had downloaded unsecured data from private WiFi networks including emails and passwords while taking photos for Google Maps. In the letter, Rogers and Barrow argue the FCC must seek answers on the incident from the people directly involved.”

A YEAR’S EXPERIENCE WITH THE ROKU BOX, as reported by SayUncle.

MATT LEWIS: So, It’s The Media vs. Haley Barbour? “While the license plate controversy is certainly an interesting local story, I can’t help thinking the national media narrative — which has cast Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour front and center in the debate — is a bit forced.”

THE MANOLO: Women As Blood-Thirsty Harridans. From a press release: “What woman didn’t laugh in amazement when Lorena Bobbit hacked off her husband’s schlong as he slept or watch in disbelief as dentist Clara Harris drove her Mercedes over her philandering husband until she knew he was dead!”

BUCKING THE TREND — OR STARTING ONE? An announcement from the University Of The South, better known as Sewanee: Tuition Cut 10% Next Year. “In a move to address the spiraling costs of higher education, the university’s Board of Regents has approved a 10 percent reduction in tuition and fees at the College for the coming academic year. The University of the South is taking this action now to make a college education more affordable and accessible. The 10 percent price reduction applies to tuition, fees, room, and board for the 2011-12 academic year; it represents a $4,600 reduction from the current year’s total.”

PUBLIC-SECTOR UNION UPDATE: Madison schools close for the day to allow teachers to protest Gov. Scott Walker’s union-busting budget plan. “Okay, now, everybody go to the demonstration! The kids won’t have school, but you can learn a lot of things outside of school. Some of these things are even taught by the teachers who are not there. For example, it’s okay to call in sick when you’re not actually sick, but you just have something that you think is really important.”

So, at the demonstrations are they saying that we shouldn’t limit children’s educations over concerns about money? Because that’s kinda ironic. . . .

Meanwhile, why doesn’t some enterprising lawyer file a class action suit against the union on behalf of parents who had to miss work, or pay for day care, to deal with the consequences of the outage? Or does the official closure prevent that? How convenient. . . .

MEGAN MCARDLE: The Political Failure Of Keynesian Economics. “When people like Paul Krugman say that almost $900 billion in stimulus didn’t work because it wasn’t big enough, you have to wonder if an adequate Keynesian stimulus is even possible.”

CURSES! I thought my minions had destroyed those photos. It’s hard to get good minions these days.

NIR ROSEN resigns.

GIVING ANIMALS LEGAL PERSONHOOD? “That someone could say the above in all seriousness stems from impractical and romantic notions about where rights come from in the first place.”
