AUSTIN BAY: Gadhafi’s Cult Leaves Libya Bereft. “Libya’s dictatorship differs from those that ruled Tunisia and Egypt. The difference begins with Gadhafi himself. Unlike Ben Ali and Mubarak, Gadhafi is a megalomaniacal crank absolutely sold on his own history-altering significance.” Austin Bay fears chaos and disaster. This is usually what happens when people get swept away by a charismatic leader and neglect the basic elements of civil society.

JONATHAN ADLER: “I keep hearing the claim that the five states that do not allow collective bargaining for teachers have the lowest standardized test scores in the country. If this were true, it would be worth investigating the connection between teacher unionization and student performance, only it’s not.”

JAMES PETHOKOUKIS: Why a top CEO rejects “pro-business” Obama. “Buckley has good reason to wonder aloud about Obama’s pre-election year conversion from nemesis to friend of Corporate America. He surely sees Team Obama failing to make obvious moves to boost U.S. global economic competitiveness. The president still supports the new healthcare and financial reform laws. The president still wants to raise taxes. And the president gave the stiff-arm to his own debt panel. So there you have it, the axis of economic evil – taxes, regulation and government spending.”

UNIONS VS. UNIONS: “Lost in the debate on public unions is private unions. Many private unions are marching in sympathy with public unions, but they better be careful. At the end of the day, their public brethren don’t care for them any more than they care for the general public.”

ABANDONING SENIOR CITIZENS AND DIALYSIS PATIENTS to go march for more money:

Kyrillos said 17 SCAT workers, including 14 bus drivers for the developmentally disabled and senior citizens, took sick leave with no notice on Friday, Feb. 25 – “the same day as a coordinated demonstration organized by labor leaders at the State Capitol.” Service was disrupted for 174 clients who take SCAT buses to medical appointments or work.

Message: We don’t care. They’re from the Communications Workers of America, a member of which assaulted Tabitha Hale last week. Nice folks, surely deserving of a raise.

No wonder they’re even losing with New Jersey Democrats.

WISCONSIN: “After a short interchange, a bunch of anti-Walkerites converge on Meade. One man grabs his camera. Another blows a whistle close to his face.” The New Civility in action: Shut the f*ck up if you don’t support the unions!

Plus, from the comments: “I don’t want to hear one more word about Tea Parties that create an atmosphere of violence.”

ANOTHER UPDATE: Prof. Jacobson: More Police Insurrection In Madison. “Mahoney is an elected official, so he can’t be fired. But it is just another indication of the dangers of police unions acting as their own authority on political grounds.”

MICHAEL KINSLEY: Lights, camera, cut on Hollywood subsidies. “In less than a decade, the absurd notion of welfare for movie producers has evolved from the kind of weird thing they do in France to an unshakable American tradition.”

SCOTT WALKER’S COURAGEOUS STAND: “Say what you will about him, but Scott Walker is serious. His plan to save the state budget is serious and his behavior in the face of insults and attack from the White House on down has been serious.”
