JAMES TARANTO: Obama’s Model For America: Detroit.
Hoffa describes the combatants in his “war” as “workers” on the one hand and “the Tea Party” on the other. But of course he isn’t interested in workers in general, only those who belong to unions–a group that, after decades of private-sector union decline, largely consists of employees of government, government contractors and government bailout beneficiaries such as General Motors and Chrysler. “The Tea Party,” meanwhile, is a dysphemism for taxpayers.
“Despite President Obama’s repeated claims to change the tone in Washington, the White House had no comment this afternoon” on Hoffa’s highly uncivil rhetoric, ABC News reports. Hey, give Hoffa credit. It isn’t easy to stop this president from talking.
In his own speech, the president made clear that he agreed with the substance if not the tone of Hoffa’s remarks. But turning America into Detroit may not be easy. After all, once Detroiters moved past Eight Mile Road, they were no longer able to vote against Coleman Young. Obama can’t shrink the electorate he will have to face next year.
And the economy’s gotten bad enough, it’s even hard to get illegals to come on over.

KANSAS CITY STAR: Tea party wins with Hoffa’s foolish ‘SOB’ remark. Ya think?
UPDATE: Reader Mark Schroer emails:
The Kansas City Star article has the line below. Sure would like a link to a real quote from tea-party supporters. I don’t recall anyone in the tea-party getting in front of a microphone and saying anything in the same ballpark as Hoffa’s SOBs speech.
It was the kind of uncivil comment that Democrats have jumped up and down about for months whenever tea party supporters also say some ugly, violence-laced words.
At least they didn’t say “racist.” Yet.
Yeah, the thing about most “violent rhetoric” from the Tea Party movement is that it’s stuff that Democrats made up.
A LITTLE LATE: Pelosi won’t say “stimulus” any more. “Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Democrats have dropped the word ‘stimulus’ from their vocabulary. Though the House minority leader and her caucus are still pushing an economic stimulus agenda to save the economy, they’ve radically changed their rhetoric with the hope of winning over voters who saw “stimulus” as close to a dirty word.”
That makes sense: Voters hate our policy! So let’s rename it!
RICHARD COHEN: “Barack Obama has lost the Hamptons.” “Over the Labor Day weekend, I went to a number of events in the Hamptons. At all of them, Obama was discussed. At none of them — that’s none — was he defended. That was remarkable. After all, sitting around various lunch and dinner tables were mostly Democrats. Not only that, some of them had been vociferous Obama supporters, giving time and money to his election effort. They were all disillusioned. Let me call the roll. I am talking about are writers and editors, lawyers and shrinks, Wall Street tycoons and freelance photographers, hedge funders and academics, run-of-the-mill Democrats and Democratic activists. They were all politically sophisticated, and just a year ago some of them were still vociferous Obama supporters. No more.” That’s because he’s been a miserable failure.

A government agent suing for libel over an evaluation of performance? And thinking about suing Amy Alkon? You don’t tug on Wonder Woman’s cape. Here’s a hint of how it’s likely to play out:
“After [the agent Thedala] Magee’s assault on Ms. Alkon’s vagina and dignity, Ms. Alkon exercised her First Amendment right to recount this incident to others in person and through her blog,” writes Randazza. “This was not only her right — it was her responsibility.”
I’d never heard of Thedala Magee before. Now, thanks to her legal threats, I have.

MORE THOUGHTS ON Jimmy Hoffa’s “Take These Sons of Bitches Out” Speech:
Hoffa announces that there are 2 sides aligned in a fight against each other, and he would like anyone who has or wants a jobs to perceive himself or herself as a “worker” and thus a foot soldier in his army, with no independent mind.
That’s quite repulsive.
And by the way, the constant use of this word “workers” reinforces the notion of the collective. You can see that for Hoffa, “workers” mean “soldiers” — and obviously, soldiers take orders. They don’t think for themselves.
Which is how Hoffa, et al. prefer it. And Obama has associated himself with Hoffa and his language at this very event.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Sarah Palin: “Welcome, Union Brothers And Sisters.” “So, as a former card-carrying IBEW sister married to a proud former Laborers, IBEW, and later USW member, please hear me out. What I have to say is for the hard working, patriotic, selfless union brothers and sisters in Michigan and throughout our country: Please don’t be taken in by union bosses’ thuggery like Jim Hoffa represented yesterday. Union bosses like this do not have your best interests at heart. What they care about is their own power and re-electing their friend Barack Obama so he will take care of them to the detriment of everyone else.”

NANOTECHNOLOGY UPDATE: A single-molecule electric motor. “For the first time, an electric motor has been made from a single molecule. At 1 nanometre long, that makes the organic compound the smallest electric motor ever. Its creators plan to submit their design to Guinness World Records, but the teeny motor could also have practical applications, such as pushing fluid through narrow pipes in ‘lab-on-a-chip’ devices.”
HEY, HERE’S AN IDEA — WHY NOT TRY DUE PROCESS INSTEAD? New Scrutiny for Sex Assault Cases.
As the U.S. Education Department is aggressively reinforcing colleges’ legal obligations to address allegations of sexual assault — and making examples of those that don’t — a federal jury on Friday found a university negligent for how it treated someone accused by a fellow student of rape.
The verdict will likely be mulled over at colleges across the country, where judicial hearings for alleged sexual assaults are the norm – and where confusion and a lack of guidance over how such hearings should transpire often result in the mishandling of cases, experts say. However, these discussions tend to focus on the rights of the accuser, rather than the alleged perpetrator.
Well, that focus is by design, of course. It’s just not, you know, constitutional.

WASHINGTON: Members Of Debt Panel Have Ties To Lobbyists. “Like many federal contractors, General Electric has a lot riding on the work of a new congressional “supercommittee,” which will help decide whether to impose massive cuts in defense and health-care spending. But the Connecticut-based conglomerate also has a potential advantage: A number of its lobbyists used to work for members of the committee, and will be able to lobby their former employers to limit the impact of any reductions in the weeks ahead.” Why not just change its name to Government Electric? But it’s not the only one.
