CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION: From Diversity to Sustainability: How Campus Ideology Is Born. “The pursuit of diversity on campuses remains a highly visible priority, but it is being subtly demoted by enthusiasm for sustainability. As an ideology, diversity is running out of steam, while sustainability is on fire. This month hundreds of colleges will mark the eighth annual Campus Sustainability Day, with activities to include a Webcast offering ‘social-change strategies and tools’ to help campuses lower carbon emissions.” It would be nicer if they focused on keeping educational costs sustainable, which they clearly aren’t . . . .
HOW CONVENIENT: The Hill: Rangel, Waters public ethics trials won’t start until after election. “Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) won’t face public ethics trials until after the election. . . . Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who chairs the panel, made the decision unilaterally after Republicans publicly balked last week about the delay in setting the schedule and argued the trials should be held before the November midterms.”
THIS IS WHY I LIVE THE WILD LIFE: A thirst for excitement is hidden in your genes.
JIM TREACHER: Lawrence O’Donnell congratulates self for apologizing for being a racist. “Anybody with a lick of common sense could’ve told him how racist this is, which must be why nobody at MSNBC stopped him.”

WELL, THIS INSPIRES CONFIDENCE: Fed Officials Mull Inflation as a Fix.
GOING TO the Jerry Brown audiotape.
THE COUNTRY’S IN THE VERY BEST OF HANDS: 72,000 stimulus payments went to dead people.
YOU KNOW, I’M WATCHING GREG GUTFELD SPECULATE THAT FRED PHELPS IS GAY, and he makes a good argument — costumes, a cappella singing, obsession with pop culture . . . Sounds plausible to me!
UPDATE: I wonder how long until we see FRED PHELPS IS GAY! bumper stickers? Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
ANOTHER UPDATE: Reader Mark Alger writes: “I keep wondering whether the existence of homosexuality is proof that God hates Fred Phelps.”
BURN YOUR VFW CARDS? “Let me just say this- if the local VFW chapters, to include the states, are willing to let National allow their PAC to push this type of agenda and these types of candidates, well, bad on them for just standing by. They should be rioting over it. Holding their dues payments where they can.”
MARKDOWNS IN tools and home improvement.
OBAMACARE UPDATE: A federal district judge has upheld Congress’s power — under the Commerce Clause — to require individuals to buy health insurance. “That is, everyone is already in the market simply by virtue of having a body which might require medical care. . . . So, if you are planning to pay out of pocket for your own medical expenses if and when they arise, you have, through that decision, done something that affected the health care market.”
MICKEY KAUS: WAS SEX THE PROBLEM AT THE TRIBUNE? “Carr writes as if there’s an obvious blazing arrow between the sort of executive who’d have sex on the 22d floor office balcony and the appearance of fake-front page wraparound ads in the Tribune-owned L.A. Times. But it’s not at all clear the wraparound ads are a misstep—as opposed to an inevitable, long-delayed revenue raiser at a paper that was dying (and failing to adapt to the Web) long before Zell took it over.”
SPEAKING TRUTH to power.
ATLAS SHRUGGED, HAYEK WEPT. And the rest of us are kind of snickering. “The reporter covering the tea parties for the New York Times appears to think that ‘the rule of law’ is some sort of exotic term of art invented by right wingers.” Remember, the people who can’t get this stuff right regard the electorate as their intellectual inferiors.
MARK HEMINGWAY: Did Pelosi ‘drain the swamp’? Voters say corruption is getting worse. I think it was less a “draining” than a restocking.
IT’S NOT THE “NATIONAL REPUBLICAN ASSOCIATION:” National Rifle Association endorses Herron over Fincher in 8th District race. “In a surprise move, the National Rifle Association has endorsed Democrat Roy Herron over Republican Stephen Fincher in the race for West Tennessee’s 8th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. John Tanner, a Democrat. . . . NRA officials gave Herron an “A” grade based on his voting record on Second Amendment issues in the state legislature, where he has served for 22 years.”
SCRAPPING the safe nuke.
THEY TOLD ME IF I VOTED FOR JOHN MCCAIN, CRUEL BUDGET CUTS WOULD AFFLICT THE POOR: And they were right!

TAXES ARE FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE (CONT’D): Auditor candidate claimed two property tax exemptions: Bump entitled to only one, state officials say. “Suzanne M. Bump, the Democratic nominee for state auditor, considers the Berkshire town of Great Barrington her home. She and her husband vote and register their cars there. It is the address she lists on the Nov. 2 ballot. Because of that, she receives a benefit: exemption from paying a personal property tax levied on homeowners who are not full-time residents. But Bump and her husband, Paul F. McDevitt, have saved more than $6,000 in Boston property taxes since 2006 by reporting that a condominium they own in South Boston is their principal residence, according to tax and property records examined by the Globe.”
OBAMACARE vs. the Rule of Law.
WANT TO LOSE FAT AND KEEP MUSCLE? Get plenty of sleep. This has been bodybuilding wisdom for decades.
NIGHTMARE IN THE DESERT: Dubai and “regime uncertainty.” Never invest in a country where the authorities can overturn the law whenever they choose.
