FROM REASON TV, it’s the Nanny Of The Month:
THOUGHTS ON THE AL GORE SCANDAL, AND ITS RECEPTION: “Quite aside from global warming, what about feminism? If the massage therapist’s story is true, we are looking at the same problem we saw with Clinton. There are politicians who give the appearance of caring about the equality of women. It’s a principle that, conceptually, is a necessary part of a political ideology they need to appear to hold. But maybe they don’t really believe it at all. What a dirty secret, thinking that women exist to serve you! . . . What makes a man treat a woman like that? Generally, I think it’s because he’s done things like that before, many times, and gotten away with it. We’re talking about an older man, with a big reputation and a lot to lose. Why would he proceed in such a crude fashion? I would guess that his sensibilities have numbed over the years, as women acceded to his moves. The moves became less and less elaborate.”
Of course, it could all turn out to be some sort of sham, though it’s looking less that way — and Gore’s not reacting that way.
STEVE CHAPMAN: Chicago Gun Control: The Sequel. “The mayor is expected to demand registration of all handguns, mandatory training for gun owners and a limit of one handgun per person. This last novel idea comes from Corporation Counsel Mara Georges, who according to the Associated Press ‘says the court ruled people can have a gun for protection, but didn’t say they’re allowed more than one.'” Bitter, angry hacks.
TUNKU VARADARAJAN: Why Obama’s Immigration Speech Was A Failure. “When a president recites Emma Lazarus in a speech on immigration—and recites not merely a fragment or two but virtually the entire length of ‘the New Colossus’—one is inclined to conclude that his speech was written by someone who has just graduated from high school and has a young head brimming with social studies. This being President Obama, however, one can conclude that he will have written a fair portion of the speech himself, and, in so concluding, one would be struck forcefully by how banal the speech was.”

TRANSPARENCY: Watchdog wants investigation of White House e-mails. “A liberal watchdog has called for an investigation into whether White House employees are using personal e-mail accounts to contact lobbyists in violation of federal law. . . . The letter also takes White House staff to task for meeting with lobbyists in nearby coffee shops instead of in the White House, where the meetings would be recorded in the White House visitor logs.”
UNEXPECTEDLY! Surprise Rise in Jobless Claims Stokes Recovery Worries. “New claims for state unemployment aid unexpectedly rose last week, heightening fears the U.S. economic recovery is stalling.” Those darn expectations.
And it’s Obama’s fault: “Obama has sought to remake America into a social democracy — like Germany or France — with a larger public sector, expanded entitlements, stronger labor unions and a changed political structure. He’s doing quite well so far. ” With France’s unemployment levels.

HEH: So, did you hear the one about U.S. politicians lecturing Afghans on corruption? “This is the upside-down red-blooded American political institution where folks have stored $90,000 in cash in their food freezers. Doesn’t everyone? Where phone calls from substantial political donors get passed right on through to the elected member while ordinary citizens can leave a message. Where members on banking committees can acquire below-market mortgage rates from private companies and successfully claim ignorance of the going rates. Where members live rent-free for years in apartments owned by advisers to giant corporations allegedly regulated by the federal government. Where members vote themselves automatic pay raises years in advance to avoid publicly discussing such awkward details so often. Where a so-called ethics committee takes how many years to figure out if not reporting all of your income is cause for member discipline.”
