WHY THERE WAS NO LOOTING IN NASHVILLE during the floods. (Thanks to reader Mike Murphy for the link).
REMEMBERING Rue McClanahan.
WORRIED: Obama Heads to Gulf as Spill ‘Furor’ Shifts Toward White House. “Spending about 15 minutes on a largely unsoiled beach is as close as Obama has come to the worst oil spill in U.S. history, one that is challenging his presidency as even some fellow Democrats complain that he has been too detached.”
UPDATE: Well, the campaign ad using this video pretty much writes itself . . . .
JOHN MERLINE ANDREW MALCOLM: Why Can’t Obama Shake Chicago-Style Government? “While millions of Americans are out of work and millions more have even given up looking despite a gazillion dollars of so-called stimulus spending, the ongoing spectacle of aides and Democratic pals of President Barack Obama offering taxpayer-funded jobs to fellow Democrats not to do something has raised the eyebrows of even the most obsequious members of his following.”
PHONEY-BALONEY JOBS: “US stock futures extended their losses Friday after a report showed fewer jobs were added to nonfarm payrolls last month and most of those were temporary census workers. US employers added 430,000 jobs to nonfarm payrolls in May, but 411,000 of those were temporary census workers. That number was also well short of the more than 500,000 economists had expected. The unemployment rate, however, fell to 9.7 percent from 9.9 percent in April.” Which was the goal, I suspect.
UPDATE: Not getting very good press. Some highlights from this AP story: “A wave of census hiring lifted payrolls by 431,000 in May, but job creation by private companies grew at the slowest pace since the start of the year. The unemployment rate dipped to 9.7 percent as people gave up searching for work. . . . Virtually all the job creation in May came from the hiring of 411,000 census workers. Such hiring peaked in May and will begin tailing off in June.”
SO I’M BLOGGING VIA VERIZON WIRELESS, because my AT&T DSL is out again. As I mentioned before, it’s been on-and-off for weeks, after previously having been quite reliable. I don’t know what’s wrong, but when I mentioned it earlier, lots of other readers reported similar experiences.

CHRIS CHRISTIE: This is not about teachers. “If I’ve got to make a choice between angering the teachers union and saving the state where I was born and raised, I’m saving the state where I was born and raised.”
I, FOR ONE, WELCOME OUR NEW MONKEY-ROBOT OVERLORDS. “In a remarkable demonstration of brain-machine interface technology, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have taught a monkey to use just its thoughts to control an advanced robotic arm and perform elaborate maneuvers with it.”
REP. ANTHONY WEINER (D-NY): We Must Hold Turkey To Account For This Provocation. That would require foreign-relations backbone, which is in scant evidence at the moment.
