CHANGE: America’s Slow Descent To Second-Class Status. “It is undeniable that we are on the path to fiscal collapse. This decline will occur in two stages. First there is the decay as the swelling national debt wears away the economy’s foundations and commits more and more future income to foreign creditors. We are already in stage one. In stage two a lethal combination of phenomena arises in quick succession: greater default risk, looming inflation, higher interest rates, declining growth, financial market instability, and an acceleration of government borrowing. They feed on each other. The economy heads on a downward spiral. Between stage one and stage two there is a tipping point. Experts know it will come, but nobody wants to predict when.”

UPDATE: Reader Larry Cipriani writes: “Another telling clue is property owners don’t trust government at any level to enforce their property rights. It’s like we’ve become a nation of commie zombies in two years. Tuesday is both election day and trash day for us. I’m throwing out the trash!”

ANOTHER UPDATE: Inflation in the real world.

WASHINGTON EXAMINER: Crazed Democrats in Virginia attack opponents, throw signs. The “D” stands for “Desperate.”

UPDATE: Utah Tea Party reader David Kirkham writes:

As fast as we can put up these Matheson = Pelosi signs they tear them out. This is on some of my property. Every morning I drive by and the Republican signs are knocked over and I pound them back in. Someone has a special dislike for the Matheson = Pelosi signs as they are invariably STOLEN. Notice the wire stands in the right-hand side of the photo are missing the Matheson = Pelosi signs. (I placed a Matheson = Pelosi sign beside it so you knew what I was talking about.) This is happening ALL across Utah. But, thanks to Freedom Works and a zillion Utah Tea Partiers, we put them up faster than then can take them down. We have now covered the state with these signs. They are outnumbered. :)

ANOTHER UPDATE: Kirkham follows up:

Thanks!

I am off to pound in 500 more signs :)

Funny, this is the first year I have EVER pounded in signs. I love it.

And that story, repeated all over the country, is the true measure of the Tea Party movement’s impact. Which in turn puts me in mind of this passage from Zombie’s pre-election blogging:

Just a thought:

“Shooting bullets at a cloud of gnats.”

That seems to be the best way to characterize the Democrats’ attempts at following Alinsky’s directive to “Pick the Target, Freeze It, Personalize It and Polarize It.” How can you do that if your opponents have no leader?

First they tried to “freeze, personalize and polarize” Rush Limbaugh, then Sarah Palin, then Glenn Beck, then John Boehner, then Karl Rove, then Glenn Beck again, then Christine O’Donnell, then Rand Paul, then Bill O’Reilly, then Sarah Palin Again, then Glenn Beck again…but it just isn’t working. Because the Tea Party is not a political party and it has no identifiable leader. Must be frustrating for the Alinskyites! In a pinch, they can always fall back on “You’re all racists!”

But the gnats keep swarming, unfazed.

Yeah. Somebody should write a book on this phenomenon or something.

AN ELECTION-THEMED SHORT STORY by John Scalzi. Excerpt:

“You are in fact not in last place,” Latasha said. “Of the five candidates for the third district council seat, you are fourth. You are two tenths of a percentage point ahead of Nukka Farn Mu.”

“Remind me which one he is again,” David said.

“He’s the one whose entire platform is that we should be allowed to eat our neighbors’ pets,” Latasha said.

Understandable.

TAXES ARE FOR THE LITTLE PEOPLE (CONT’D): Chafee Benefits from Tax Breaks on RI Properties. “This complex web of ownership brings a series of financial and political benefits to the Chafees. Their motor vehicle registrations at the couple’s Exeter farm allow them to benefit from a lower car tax rate. Their homestead exemption in Providence cuts the property taxes on his 54 Barnes Street home by as much as half and Chafee’s residency in Warwick has allowed him to mount his campaign for governor from a political base of support.”

UPDATE: Reader William Girardot writes: “Apparently Lincoln Chafee’s property tax dodge once again belies Obama’s assertion that ‘at a certain point you’ve made enough money.'” Heh.

LIVEBLOGGING THE ELECTION, starting now.

BUBONIC PLAGUE CAME FROM CHINA: “The first outbreak of plague occurred in China more than 2,600 years ago before reaching Europe via Central Asia’s ‘Silk Road’ trade route, according to a study of the disease’s DNA signature.”

THE INSANESTREAM MEDIA:

In today’s “the MSM is worse than you thought possible” news, one media outlet is caught on tape plotting to tie Joe Miller to child molesters, while another “forgets” to run Christine O’Donnell’s big 30-minute ad… twice. The day before the election.

Reality truly is stranger than fiction sometimes — if you wrote this kind of media bias into a script people would tell you it was too crazy to believe. And yet it happened.

Truth is stranger than fiction. And, where the nexus between “mainstream” media and political corruption is concerned, it’s worse than would be considered believable in fiction.

TECHNOLOGY AND BIKE COMMUTING. I like the airbag hoodie, but I think it should be an entire outfit.
