CLIVE CROOK: “Democrats are far too preoccupied with how to ignore a defeat in Massachusetts, if it turns out that they lose tomorrow. . . . Coakley might still win, of course. (Nate Silver says the race is too close to call.) But even if she ekes out a narrow victory, Democrats urgently need to stop and think–not about how to cram through health reform while they can, but about why everything is going so wrong.”

JULES CRITTENDEN: A Perfect Storm. “It’s bizarre. It’s as though the state’s one-party government has been taunting the voters.”

STEVEN BARNES: “Just me, or was Sigourney Weaver hotter than hell on SNL? I love mature women who have taken care of themselves. Until 30, your body is a gift of nature. After 40, it’s what you can take and hold. Yum.”

You know, I saw her, and they had a flashback of her hosting from 1986, and I thought she looked better now than back then.

UPDATE: Politico: New Poll — Brown Up By 9. Don’t get cocky. The real poll is tomorrow, and for that one you’ve got to show up in person.

Plus this: “Brown holds a 15-point lead among males and crushes Coakley by 41 points among self-described independents, a group that’s been steadily inching away from the Democratic party over the last year due to growing apprehension with government spending, bailouts and health care reform.”

A CLOSE READING OF OBAMA’S COAKLEY SPEECH: “That sounds nicely slogan-y, but what does it mean? You can count on Democrats to be hostile to business? How is it defending us to attack Wall Street, and if it is, why did you give so much of our money to Wall Street?” Read the whole thing.

BREAKFAST COMPANIONS OF THE FUTURE: Robots Who Feed You. I’m getting a distinct Rosie-from-The-Jetsons vibe. Which is good!

THE SECRET HERO OF THE SCOTT BROWN CAMPAIGN: Mitt Romney?

JONAH GOLDBERG: “It looks better and better for Brown, but it’s worth repeating that even if he loses, the mere fact that it was close is a massive repudiation of the White House and the Democrats. Everyone’s trying to come up with historical analogies. I think Harris Wofford in 1991 is a good one. But what keeps coming to my mind is LBJ in 1968. Obviously, it’s not really a direct comparison. But LBJ dropped his reelection bid after the New Hampshire primary because he only beat Eugene McCarthy by 7 points (lots of people mistakenly think LBJ lost in ’68). That it was that close was enough for LBJ to get the message. Even if Brown loses, the message to the Democrats should be deafening.”

But whatever, don’t get cocky.

HAITI: EU downplays talk of Haiti rift with US. “Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, was able to land on Saturday, while some planes carrying aid were turned away.”
