TROUBLE FOR Steny Hoyer?

SEINFELD IN REAL LIFE: Poppy-Seed Bagel Triggers Kafka-esque Nightmare. “It’s not the mistake that’s disturbing, it’s government officials’ refusal to admit a mistake is possible.” They should be punished as an example to others, but they won’t be.

WOW. Just heard Limbaugh’s opening monologue, where he gave the GOP establishment both barrels. Seems he doesn’t just fear a return to business-as-usual after November, but actually expects it. He’s openly warning that this will create a third party for 2012. I’ve issued the same kind of warnings myself, but he seemed a lot more . . . definite about it. I wonder what he knows that I don’t?

UPDATE: Reader Drew Kelley writes: “Could it be that he would commit himself to actually leading a revolt out of the party, and the creation – nationwide – of a viable third-party? 20-million weekly listeners is a powerful tool to create a social movement, 3-hours a day, 5-days a week, with rallies and fundraisers on Sat’s & Sun’s – and, he’s got his own jet.”

He brings more to the table than Ross Perot did, and the ground is far more fertile.

IS THIS THE HOPE, OR THE CHANGE? Gallup Finds U.S. Unemployment at 10.0% in Mid-October. “Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, is at 10.0% in mid-October — essentially the same as the 10.1% at the end of September but up sharply from 9.4% in mid-September and 9.3% at the end of August. This mid-month measurement confirms the late September surge in joblessness that should be reflected in the government’s Nov. 5 unemployment report.” Which, conveniently, comes out right after the elections. You know the White House has to be grateful for that.

WAR AGAINST PHOTOGRAPHY UPDATE: You Can Photograph That Federal Building. “The right of photographers to stand in a public place and take pictures of federal buildings has been upheld by a legal settlement reached in New York. . . . The settlement, filed on Friday, ended a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security by Antonio Musumeci, 29, of Edgewater, N.J. He was arrested Nov. 9, 2009, as he videotaped a demonstrator in front of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan United States Courthouse at 500 Pearl Street. His principal camera was confiscated but he recorded the encounter on a second camera. On two later occasions, he was also threatened with arrest.”

Full text of the settlement agreement is here.

VERONIQUE DE RUGY: When the government tries to help small businesses, it hurts businesses (and taxpayers) of all sizes. “Public policy uncertainties also tend to decrease business investment. The health care overhaul will bring new but still unknown obligations to insure employees; the Bush-era tax cuts are set to end next year, but their fate is unclear; legislation aimed at tackling climate change could raise businesses’ energy costs. Meanwhile, as government spending increases, so do the chances of more taxes in the future. As a result, companies are freezing new hires, cutting benefits, and delaying expansion plans.”

“Just quit monkeying with things” is apparently not an economic program that appeals to our ruling class. Because then what would they do?

CHANGE: U.S. Pushes to Ease Technical Obstacles to Wiretapping. “Law enforcement and counterterrorism officials, citing lapses in compliance with surveillance orders, are pushing to overhaul a federal law that requires phone and broadband carriers to ensure that their networks can be wiretapped, federal officials say.” They told me if I voted for John McCain we’d . . . . oh, hell, this is too easy.
