MICHAEL WALSH: The (Fantasy) World According to Contessa Brewer. “The pride of Syracuse University is, in fact, the perfect avatar of her generation, her head so stuffed full of political correctness that she literally cannot think any other way. Instead of taking a set of facts — oh, just for laughs, let’s say an attempted car-bombing in Times Square — and coming to a logical working hypothesis — probably Muslim terrorists, with whom we are still at war — la Contessa immediately goes to the PC well.”

GREEK PROTESTERS BURN BANKS, KILL THREE. But they’re socialists, not tea partiers, so it’s okay.

BYRON YORK: For Justice Department, Times Square case is Christmas Day all over again. “As it investigates the Times Square bombing plot, the Obama administration is taking steps to correct some of the mistakes made after the Detroit Christmas Day bombing attempt. But the administration seems as determined as ever to handle Times Square suspect Faisal Shahzad in the civilian justice system and not treat him as an enemy combatant, even though it appears Shahzad is connected to the Taliban in Pakistan.”

FROM NICK DENTON, AN EMAIL ON THE TIMES SQUARE BOMBING:

I was curious about Shahzad’s background.

This AP report above suggests that his wife is Pashtun. And Shehzad seems to be one of the sub-tribes of the Ghilzai federation.

The Ghilzai is the main tribal group supporting the Taliban. It’s Mullah Omar’s tribe.

i.e. Shahzad might indeed be our first true American Taliban.

If people are going to start profiling Pakistanis, we might as well identify the correct group. Maybe there are some experts among your readers.

Any thoughts?

MICKEY KAUS: “Why would a California teachers’ union oppose a tax increase that would raise unionized teachers’ salaries? Because some (18%) of the money would go to increasingly popular charter schools.”

AP: Feds Flailing in Huttaree Militia Case.

Federal authorities touted the arrests of nine members of a Michigan militia as a pre-emptive strike against homegrown terrorists, declaring at an initial court hearing that the suspects with “dark hearts and evil intent” wanted to go to war against the government.

Five weeks later, prosecutors are scrambling to regroup after a judge questioned the strength of their evidence by ordering the so-called rebels released until trial and saying they had a right to “engage in hate-filled, venomous speech.”

“The government is falling short,” said David Griem, a former federal prosecutor who’s not involved in the case. “The message that’s been sent to the community is there are problems with this case.”

Indeed.

PROF. ROBERT TURNER: Civilian terror trials are the violation. ” President Obama’s deadline for closing the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay expired 102 days ago, and Attorney General Eric Holder has now admitted that at least 40 detainees will be held indefinitely, without trial. Enough, already: It’s time to rescind the order, rule out any civilian trials — and explain to the world why holding the detainees at Gitmo is the right thing to do under the Law of Armed Conflict (which subsumes what was long known as the Laws of War).”
