MEGAN MCARDLE:

As some of you know, Chuck Grassley is making a fuss over the link on the Health and Human Services website that allows people to click a button to “state your support for health reform this year”. The White House is arguing that it’s legal. Possibly, just barely. But it’s creepy, and the government shouldn’t be doing this.

They recognize no barriers.

WHEN BULLIES OVERREACH: “For those who suggested that Obama’s main selling point was his ‘superior temperament,’ we anxiously await an admission of grave error. It seems they were terribly mistaken.”

TARGETING THE WHITE HOUSE on 30 Rock?

A LIST OF Obama-endorsed “journalists.” “It must have been exciting for Ron Brownstein to meet heavy journalistic talents like Maddow and Olbermann.”

NEW JERSEY: Happy October Surprise, Governor Corzine. “Today a jury found Joe Ferriero, former chairman of the Bergen County Democratic Organization, guilty of one count of conspiracy to defraud and two counts of mail fraud. Guess how much money Jon Corzine and his family gave to Ferriero over the years? $441,600.”

THE HEADLINE READS OBAMA CONTINUES TO LEAD 2012 CONTESTS, but that’s putting a pretty good spin on the fact that he’s only 4 points ahead of Mike Huckabee. Yes, Mike Huckabee. If you’re 47-43 over Mike Huckabee, that’s not a good sign. When, you know, you’re President, and the media love you.

WHITE HOUSE “MESSAGE CONTROL” overreaches miserably. And encourages TV networks to show some backbone.

NEW NATURAL GAS DISCOVERIES change the energy map. “Vast amounts of the clean-burning fossil fuel have been discovered in shale deposits, setting off a gas rush. But how it will affect our energy use is still uncertain. . . . Natural gas offers advantages over other fossil fuels. It burns cleaner than coal, producing much less carbon dioxide. Since coal-fired power generation is responsible for a third of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, replacing at least some of that coal with gas could significantly reduce such pollution. And using natural gas to replace gasoline and diesel fuel in vehicles could reduce the country’s reliance on foreign oil.” I expect unnecessary regulatory hurdles. . . .

EARPHONES: Ultimate Ears. These come highly recommended, but I haven’t tried them. On our car trip to Columbus, the Insta-Daughter gave the Sony noise-cancelling earphones that I mentioned a while ago a workout, and liked ’em a lot.

UPDATE: Studio god Tom Spaulding emails:

Ultimate Ears are great. We use what are called “molds”…custom-fit earbuds that fit precisely in your individual ears, having been made from casts or “molds” that an audiologist makes using a quick-setting gel. Big money, big sound.

I use the M-Audio line of generic ear buds for my iPod use…much better than the supplied version from Apple.

Never tried those.

VERY COOL PHOTOS of Kingfishers in action.
