ANN ALTHOUSE IS liveblogging Obama’s speech. Stephen Green is drunkblogging.

Speech excerpts here.

UPDATE: Here’s the full text of the speech.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Scariest moment of the night? This image. Is this what Obama sees? Give him bonus points for staying cool.

MORE: Jindal’s reply? I’d say so-so. Ann Althouse says: “Jindal is nicely upbeat and confidence-inspiring.” I thought he was adequate but not great. Audio problems didn’t help. Also, work out some, Bobby. Obama has opened space up for skinny guys with big ears, but . . . .

MORE STILL: Various readers object to this line of Obama’s: “And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it.”

But, of course, Karl Benz wasn’t American. On the other hand, Henry Ford pretty much invented the modern automobile, so I’ll give him a semi-pass on that one. And did America invent solar power?

STILL MORE: Luntz’s focus group liked Jindal more than I did, or Althouse did.

Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell in the after-speech spin points out that in the first month of Obama’s administration Congress has spent more money than it spent on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Katrina relief over the past seven years.

Also, “Obama mentioned freedom once.”

Plus, a bad review for Jindal.

STILL MORE: Various readers think that Hillary and Geithner, in particular, don’t look particularly hopeful here. That’s for sure. Is it that they know something we don’t, or has it just been a long month?

DRINKING UP Granny’s little house. And her first and second mortgage. At least the beer was probably good.

FOR THE SPEECH: Playing O-Bingo. Er, okay.

UPDATE: Of course, why bother watching the speech when it’s already been Laphamized by Jennifer Loven. Origins of the term “Laphamization” are here. Journalism!

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO KNOW? “At-home personal genomics kits are available and affordable, but how relevant are the results?”

LOOKING AT THE TOP 10 Ig Nobel awards. “The quirkiest awards in science.”

MOE LANE LOOKS AT THE Biden / Stanford Financial connection and is less charitable than I was. “John Edwards was right. Two Americas, and we all belong to the America that doesn’t get to play at these interlocking levels of finance, influence, and accounting chicanery.”

JOHN TIERNEY: Pure Politics In The Guise of Science: “Why, since President Obama promised to ‘restore science to its rightful place’ in Washington, do some things feel not quite right?”

MEGAN MCARDLE ON MORTGAGE RELIEF AND THE RENTER/OWNER DIVIDE: “I think that most of the people supporting the mortgage plan really do feel like falling home prices is an obvious catastrophe. I also think that most of them own homes. Because, of course, if prices stay high, where is the money coming from to support them? Well, from people like me, who do not currently have a home to sell, but would like to acquire one in the not-terribly distant future. Keeping people and banks from selling at a loss requires that I buy a house which is overpriced.” There’s already an Angry Renter website, but this underscores an important point: Government “help” for one group is almost always at the expense of another. Politicians try to disguise that, but it’s the reality. Note, too, that the foreclosure “crisis” is largely confined to five states.

NEWS ABOUT AGING: “We do not just lose the ability to make hair pigment as we get older. Oh no, it is worse than that. Old hair cells pump out hydrogen peroxide (a toxic compound!) which turns our hair white.” Can we fix this, please? My hair won’t stay vibrant and youthful forever.

REMEMBRANCE OF Ports Past.
