PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT “AMERICAN-STYLE COWBOY CAPITALISM,” but things are worse in Europe.

NOT SO STIMULATIVE: E.P.A. Expected to Act in Regulating Carbon Dioxide. “If the environmental agency determines that carbon dioxide is a dangerous pollutant to be regulated under the Clean Air Act, it would set off one of the most extensive regulatory rule makings in history.”

POLITICO: Dems Abandon Burris. Hey, the stimulus passed, so now he’s just a liability.

FINDING THE HUMOR in survivalism.

UPDATE: Heh: “The thing about being a survivalist kook and stockpiling gold, guns, and food is that there’s no downside. Even if you’re wrong, you’ve still got gold, guns, and food.” Plus the porn and likker you’ve stockpiled as “trade goods.”

MICHAEL BARONE ON THE SHRINKING HISPANIC POPULATION: “If this trend is real and continues, I think there will be a lot fewer Hispanics found in the 2010 census enumeration than 2000-07 demographic trends would lead Hispanic leaders and others to expect. They’re going to charge that there has been a huge undercount and will press hard for the enumeration to be altered by statistical sampling.”

POLITICAL WIRE: Huge Murtha Earmark Scandal Breaking on Capitol Hill. Can’t say this would surprise me . . . .

UPDATE: More here.

MORE: From the comments: “The media is trying to make it a bi-partisan scandal. It’s a Murtha scandal. Check John Pugliese and Jon Walker’s donations and occupations. $150,000 in contributions in 3 years to national Dems with something like $40,000 to republicans.”

ADVICE ON DATING, LOVE AND SEX, from Dr. Helen and Amy Alkon. Get a few drinks in her? Amy says yes! Well, sorta.

LOTS OF HALF-PRICE DVDs for kids.

A CANADIAN SOLDIER WRITES ON going to war with the Yanks. One troubling bit: “On my second tour in Afghanistan in 2005, I didn’t work with U.S. forces as much as I did other NATO troops and I quickly realized that I missed the professionalism that the Americans bring to the table. On a couple of occasions, for example, soldiers from other nations were caught sleeping in the guard towers overlooking Camp Julian. Doesn’t give you a warm and fuzzy feeling when the people guarding you are sleeping on the job.”

MEGAN MCARDLE ON GEITHNER: “The longer I think about it, the more shocked I am at how badly Treasury has handled this. First, they refused to consult with banks or, apparently, too many Bush administration officials, because they didn’t want the plan ‘tainted’ by such seedy associations. Since as far as I can tell these two sources have custody of, to a first approximation, 90% of the information needed to make a plan work, this was moronic. It was a classic technocratic error, thinking that a pure planner should operate without regard to the desires of the grubby, greedy people they’re supposed to regulate.”

U.T.’S PRESIDENT JOHN PETERSEN quits.

JENNIFER RUBIN: There are two Americas. “There is a political America and an economic America — and the latter is showing no confidence in Obama right now.”

WHAT YOU NEED for a new pet.

POLITICO: A REVOLVING DOOR? “In three months since Election Day, at least a half-dozen prominent journalists have taken jobs working for the federal government. Journalists, including some of those who’ve jumped ship, say it’s better to have a solid job in government than a shaky job – or none at all – in an industry that’s fading fast. But conservative critics answer with a question: Would journalists be making the same career choices if John McCain had beaten Barack Obama in November?” If it were another industry, and a Republican candidate/President, the press would treat this as a serious conflict of interest. It does kinda explain the favorable election coverage . . . .

MESA, ARIZONA: More Than 500 Protest Obama’s Arrival.

The protestors, about 500 to 600 strong and growing, began arriving as ticket-holders walked in. . . . They held their signs up high: “Don’t tread on me,” “Spend all you want, I’ll pick up the tab,” “I’ll keep my freedom! You keep the change!” “Free fertility drugs now.” And “B.O. smells and so does Socialism.”

A Gilbert woman, with a sign that said, “Fund bikini wax now,” said she is entitled to the beauty treatment.

“It’s a self-esteem issue and hygiene issue, which makes it a health care issue, I think we’re all entitled,” said the woman in jest, who only gave the name JoAnne, because she is skipping work.

At least people have a sense of humor.
