APPARENTLY, Pol Pot wasn’t the only one with that line of thinking. Good reason to own a gun or ten.

REMEMBERING THE 1980S VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO: As I’ve mentioned before, those were great cars. And, personally, I think 16-valve engines were a more important 1980s innovation than Alf.

NICE TO HEAR IT: How Capitalism Will Save Us. On the cover of the new issue of Forbes. “What started in August 2007 was not the failure of free markets but the outcome of bad government actions.”

JOHN MCCAIN: “I don’t agree with [Vice President] Dick Cheney’s allegation that he’s part of both the legislative and the executive branch.” Actually, McCain’s wrong about that.

JAMES PETHOKOUKIS: Would Obama, Dems Kill 401(k) Plans? “What effect would this plan have on an already battered stock market? Well, I would imagine it would send it even lower, sticking a shiv into the portfolios of everyone who didn’t jump aboard. But I am sure the Chinese would love to jump in and buy all our cheap stocks to fund the retirement of their citizens.”

PEOPLE WHO THOUGHT they were getting rid of craziness in the New York governor’s office by getting rid of Eliot Spitzer are sure to be disappointed: “Gov. Paterson’s chief of staff now says he owed nearly $300,000 in back taxes, $100,000 more than was previously known – and his lawyer blamed the problem on ‘non-filer syndrome.'” Apparently, no one else has heard of this diagnosis before. (Via JWF).

“JOHN GALT” DONATES TO OBAMA: Well, sort of . . . . “I went back to the Obama site and made three additional donations using the names Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Bill Ayers, all with different addresses. All the transactions went through using the same credit card. I saved screenshots of the transactions.” I, too, am mystified as to how this is possible. (See this report too). Any readers know if or how this could be done?

A DUAL-GENERATION APPROACH FOR THE PRIUS? “Auto Express is reporting that Toyota will continue to offer the current-gen Prius alongside its newer version, at least in the UK. The previous car would see its price lowered in response to the upcoming new Insight hybrid from Honda, which is expected to undercut Toyota’s seminal hybrid by at least £3,000. If this rumor turns out to be true, expect Toyota to match that price point with its entry-level Prius.” That actually kind of makes sense.

I ALWAYS PLANNED FOR INSTAPUNDIT TV and now it’s starting to become a reality.

COOL: Chrysler to Launch ‘PeaPod’ Electric Cars Worldwide in 2010. “Developed by Chrysler-owned Green Eco Mobility (GEM), the PeaPod is capable of travelling 40 miles on a single charge. According to the company’s innovation chief, Peter Arnell, this is more than enough for most daily commutes.”

SOMEONE TELL THE NEW YORK TIMES: It’s hog-killin’ time! Actually, I appreciate the effort to screen out the most obvious stereotypes, anyway. . . .

A VIDEO PODCAST ON NANOTECHNOLOGY, FROM GENERAL ELECTRIC:

(Via Grey Goo News).

WALTER OLSON: “Dean Erwin Chemerinsky of the newly founded UC Irvine school of (ideologically charged) law seems to fancy himself the conscience of legal academia. But it’s looking very much as if he — along with some bloggers and legal publications who should know better — owe an abject apology to Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs of the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.”

AN ARREST FOR VOTER FRAUD IN PENNSYLVANIA: “Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green said Jemar Barksdale, an ex-employee of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), turned in voter-registration cards for 18 already-registered voters, altering information and forging signatures.” That’s okay. Remember, under the new spin, voter fraud is no longer a “myth” — now it’s all-American!

UPDATE: Reader Jeanne Marie Lynch emails: “Isn’t some of this voter registration fraud really identity theft?” Forged signature, pretending to be someone else . . . could be. Wonder if we’ll see it prosecuted that way. Or simply as forgery?

JERRY POURNELLE: Distributism vs. redistributism. “Obama and the Democrats propose a redistribution of incomes though the ‘earned income tax credit’. This is often confused with the distributist views of Belloc and Chesterton, The differences are profound.”
