L.A. TIMES: Does urging political restraint apply to McCain and Obama or just the Republican? “So as a growing number of political bloggers, including Wake Up America, have asked in recent hours, how long do you think before the mainstream media starts reporting on scenes like this amazing crude photo here from a Sarah Palin event in Philadelphia Saturday? With 22 campaign days left, might perhaps the Democratic ticket also feel the need to warn its supporters to tone it down?” Nonsense. Democrats feel righteous indignation. Only Republicans can be guilty of hate.
LAWYERS, GUNS AND MONEY: A look at post-Heller Second Amendment litigation.
“HITTING THE RESET BUTTON” on the McCain campaign. I think it’s more like the “hyperspace” button on the old Asteroids game. But hey, that often worked!
VIRGINIA POSTREL: “More than half of French respondents would move to the U.S. if they could, according to a 17-country survey by Reader’s Digest.“
OBAMA RALLIES turn ugly. Heh.
A GENERATION GAP ON NUCLEAR POWER: “The poll of more than 2700 Americans found that a majority of people over the age of 32 . . . favor building more nuclear power plans. The level of support increased with the age of the respondents — just as it happens to increase with the age of the presidential candidates this year. The only group in the poll that opposes new plants, by a margin of 38 to 35 percent, consisted of people aged 18 to 31.” They’re not old enough to remember that Three Mile Island was a big nothing, or to have learned that there’s no such thing as a free lunch, I guess . . . .
WHAT AMERICA NEEDS NOW: “A new economic stimulus plan that pumps billions of dollars into infrastructure projects and budget relief for cash-strapped state and local governments.” Because, you know, we’re not broke enough yet.
ABUSING THE Secret Service? “Thugocracy” on the march? I hope that this story will be looked into. And I hope it turns out not to be accurate.
EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN: Remembering the panic of 1837. “Out of Panic, Self-Reliance.” We could use a bit more of that now . . . .
AMAZON VS. EBAY: Advantage, Amazon — for the moment. Plus this: “E-commerce, though, was once thought to be a refuge from economic storms. People who stay away from the mall might actually be more tempted to shop online and hunt for deals, or so the thinking went. But analysts are now revisiting that assumption.” I’ve probably shopped on line more, to save on gas and traffic hassles. But I suppose that might change if things tighten up.
