THE OWNERS’ DREAM — A NEWSPAPER WITHOUT EMPLOYEES — may be getting closer: Bee offers buyouts to a majority of full-time employees. “The Bee offered voluntary buyouts to the majority of its full-time employees Monday as its advertising slump continues and the newspaper scrambles for additional ways to cut costs. The buyouts came two months after The Bee eliminated 86 jobs as part of an across-the-board layoff ordered by its parent, The McClatchy Co. of Sacramento. A companywide wage freeze was imposed by McClatchy two weeks ago. In July, The Bee unveiled a smaller print format, another way to save money.”

Unlike many in the blogosphere, I take no joy in this, though perhaps a bit more ideological diversity would have helped newspapers weather these economic times. The reader who sent me the link says he quit subscribing over bias already, and seems quite happy to see the paper going down.

OOPS:

Former Texas Rep. Charlie Wilson — yes, that Charlie Wilson — was speaking at an anti-war rally when he, um, flubbed a line:

“We should be led by Osama bin Laden,” he said, then quickly corrected himself. “I mean Obama and Biden.”

You know, Ted Kennedy made a similar slip.

WHO KNEW THAT THERE WERE SO MANY RACISTS IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY:

DENVER — Racial prejudice is being cited among senior union leaders to explain Sen. Barack Obama’s difficulty in winning over support from white rank-and-file members.

Obama (D-Ill.) is counting on organized labor to help win him key electoral votes in Ohio, Michigan and other battleground states. Karen Ackerman, political director for the AFL-CIO, acknowledged that Obama’s race is an important factor for some union members.

“This race is very complicated because there is an African-American candidate for president,” said Ackerman. “We feel there is a racial component for some union members, but we’re confident we can overcome that.”

Some in the labor movement say that Obama’s race has made it difficult for a significant number of union members to support him over Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive GOP nominee.

Of course, they may not be racists — they may have problems with Obama’s (and, now Biden’s) hardline anti-gun stance. Then there’s the whole Bill Ayers thing . . . . (Via Michelle Malkin).

Some related thoughts from Shannon Love.

UPDATE: Reader Bryan Walter emails:

It isn’t racism. I am a less than proud member of SEIU. The first few calls from the union, I responded by politely asking them not to call back. Now I simply hang up on them and their junk mail goes right in the trash.

If the union would actually do something to help it’s members instead of perpetually pursuing political power maybe it’s membership would be more enthusiastic.

Ouch.

GOOD HILLARY SPEECH: And not too long. Bill could have taken a lesson, there . . . .

UPDATE: TV talking-heads seem to think her endorsement of Obama was minimal, and one pointed out that although she said Michelle Obama would be a great First Lady, she never actually came out and said that Barack Obama would be a great President.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Reader C.J. Burch emails: “Joe Biden just took it in the shorts. Everybody that leaves that building is going to be wondering why Obama picked him. Now that I think about it they are also going to be wondering why they picked Obama.” Related thoughts from Dan Riehl.

Plus, David Harsanyi: “I think Hillary forgot this wasn’t a campaign speech for 2012.”

SO THE CAMERA KEEPS CUTTING TO MICHELLE OBAMA as Hillary speaks, and she’s never smiling.

PROGRESSIVE schwag.

WHY IS HILLARY’S THEME SONG Are You Gonna Go My Way?

UPDATE: Hillary irony.

STEPHEN GREEN is drunkblogging the DNC events.

SHOULD IT HAVE BEEN MARK WARNER? “I keep thinking that if he were the nominee, McCain would be fifteen points behind.” Yeah, strong guy. Our podcast interview with Mark Warner is here.

UPDATE: Not helping Obama, though: “Now, he’s boasting about the things he achieved as governor of Virginia, and it just makes me think about how Obama has no record at all of achievements like that.”

SOUNDS FAIR TO ME: “Lawyers who won the historic Second Amendment gun rights case in the Supreme Court — District of Columbia v. Heller (07-290) — on Monday asked a federal judge to award them more than $3.5 million for attorneys’ fees, plus $13,215.30 for expenses and court costs. In a motion and memorandum filed with U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan, the attorneys said that they had achieved ‘one of the most profound and important victories available under our system of justice.'” Which is certainly true.

STARSHIP TROOPERS 3 ON BLU-RAY: I didn’t even know there was a Starship Troopers 2. Interview with Casper Van Dien at the link.

NEW YORK TIMES: Some Clinton Fund-Raisers Are Still Simmering. “Even as Mrs. Clinton prepared for her moment in the spotlight on Tuesday night, with a speech expected to offer a strong embrace of the nominee, the lingering rancor between the two sides appears to have intensified with the convention this week, with grousing from some Clinton fund-raisers about the way they are being treated here by the Obama campaign in terms of hotel rooms, convention credentials and the like.”

OBAMA-BIDEN: The all-Con-Law-prof ticket. Shoot, I may have to endorse ’em just out of professional self-interest.

PROBLEMS recruiting men for college.

UPDATE: Reader Bruce Giese emails: “Gee, I can’t imagine why men wouldn’t rush into a place that ‘challenges’ their ‘perceived’ manliness for 4 long years.”
