CHRISTOPHER RUFO: A Compromised Secret Service. The agency has sacrificed its basic mission on the altar of DEI.

JIM TREACHER GOES OUT ON A LIMB: Maybe the Secret Service Isn’t a Vehicle for Female Empowerment.

This push for diversity is fine when the manager at your local Starbucks is hiring. I’m not so sure it’s such a great idea for, say, the United States Secret Service.

Here’s a slick promotional video the agency released last year:

Yaaaaaaaas kween! Girlbosses are getting it done! Struttin’ down a hallway in slo-mo. Liftin’ weights in slo-mo. Everything’s cooler in slo-mo.

“Being a part of history is probably the best part of this job.” Well, you’re definitely part of history now. How does it feel?

So that promo was great for public relations. The press loved it. Big win for the agency.

Fast-forward to July 13. Butler, Pennsylvania. What does this push for diversity look like in practice?

It looks like this:

I guess she’s protecting him from… ants? The Lollipop Guild? I don’t know.

The Secret Service inspired a bit more confidence when they were still beefy guys in khakis, blazers, argyle socks and Sperry Top-Siders:

“THIS IS WHY WE DRILL”: Embarrassing Secret Service Response to Attempted Trump Assassination. “I spent a couple of years in my career with Broaddus Defense, a private company that helps clients prevent and prepare to respond to violent attacks. The Secret Service fumbled the response to the attempted assassination of President Trump yesterday, and every member of the assigned team and their superiors should be taken in front of a Senate committee and grilled during a session that is carried live by every single media platform. This event and the Secret Service’s response is why we drill.”

JIM TREACHER: Maybe the Secret Service Isn’t a Vehicle for Female Empowerment.

“Well, you wouldn’t do any better under fire, Mr. Blogger!” You’re exactly right. Which is why I shouldn’t be in the Secret Service any more than they should.

Kimberly Cheatle, head of the Secret Service, got the publicity she wanted for hiring a bunch of women. Now she’s got a bunch of questions to answer.

How did this happen?

How did a guy with a rifle access a rooftop that close to his target?

Why didn’t agents listen to the attendees who spotted him first?

Why was one female agent heard screaming, “What are we doing? Where are we going?”

Why haven’t you cleaned out your desk yet?

That last question is the most important one. I sure wouldn’t want to trade places with Cheatle right now. Republicans hate her for letting this happen to Trump, and Democrats hate her for handing him the election.

The Secret Service has no plans to beef up security at the RNC in Milwaukee, saying: “We are confident in the plans we have.”

They shouldn’t be confident in anything right now. They’re not filming a promotional video with women in Kevlar vests walking in slow motion while contemporary R&B plays. They’re supposed to be protecting a presidential candidate, and they just failed utterly.

Yep.

TRUMP SHOOTING IS SECRET SERVICE NIGHTMARE but here’s the key bit:

Typically, the Secret Service has an advance team assess a location ahead of a campaign event to make a security plan, Mihalek said. Agents will take physical measures of the area, determine the necessary personnel and work with counter snipers to examine nearby buildings and their distances to where the president or the presidential candidate will be. . . .

Cheatle returned to the Secret Service after working as a senior director at PepsiCo North America overseeing facilities, personnel and business continuity.

In her previous stint at the Secret Service, she was the first woman to serve as assistant director of protective operations. Her appointment to lead the Secret Service made her the agency’s second female director. When he appointed her director, Biden said he and first lady Jill Biden got to know Cheatle while she served on his security detail during his vice presidency.

“She has my complete trust,” said the president in 2022.

Trump’s Secret Service detail was given additional assets that is part of the protocol for the presumptive nominee due to his heavy campaigning, which includes additional manpower, counter-sniper, drones and robotic dogs, the law enforcement official said. On Saturday, there were four counter-sniper teams on site, the official said.

Additionally, Trump’s teleprompter is protective and the flag and podium banners are made of steel, the law enforcement official said.

A man who was at the rally said that soon after Trump started speaking, he saw a man “bear crawling” up the building.

“We’re pointing at the guy,” said the witness, named Greg, adding, “he had a rifle — you could literally see him with a rifle.” He told the BBC that he and others told the police and were pointing him out to U.S. Secret Service agents, and he estimated that the man was on the roof for “three or four minutes” before shots were heard.

Other witnesses told CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA that they also saw the gunman and tried to alert officers before the shooting.

I don’t understand why buildings with a clear sight line weren’t either secured, or at least held under constant observation.

Plus: “Federal investigators said the gunman was not carrying identification, so they analyzed his DNA to provide a biometric confirmation of his identity.” I’m surprised they had a DNA sample to compare it to so fast. I wonder where that came from?

UPDATE:

Here’s AP’s initial take:

Here’s the WaPo:

This was the Post at the start of the day:

Here’s NBC:

ABOUT THAT BIG CRIME REDUCTION…: Secret Service agent robbed at gunpoint after Biden fundraiser. “On Saturday evening, a Secret Service employee had his bag stolen at gunpoint near a Southern California residential community, according to the Tustin Police Department. The agent fired his service weapon during the robbery, though it’s unknown whether the suspect was injured because they have not been located yet.”

JIM TREACHER: Has the Secret Service Gone Insane?

Brie Stimson, Fox News:

A U.S. Secret Service agent with Vice President Kamala Harris’ detail was removed from their assignment after engaging in a physical fight with other agents while on duty Monday…

Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the U.S. Secret Service, called the incident a “medical matter,” adding that the agency wouldn’t be commenting further.

A medical matter… that caused a physical fight between Secret Service agents? Wait, what?

All we were told at first was that the agent was acting “erratically.” But thanks to Susan Crabtree at Real Clear Politics, now we know some specifics:

[Secret Service agent Michelle] Herczeg showed up at the [Joint Base Andrews] terminal and began acting erratically, grabbing another senior agent’s personal phone and deleting applications on it, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The other agent, a shift leader, was able to recover his phone and then acted as if nothing had happened.

But Herczeg’s bizarre behavior didn’t stop. She then began mumbling to herself, hid behind curtains, and started throwing items, including menstrual pads, at an agent, telling him that he would need them later to save another agent and telling her peers that they were “going to burn in hell and needed to listen to God,” a source told RealClearPolitics.

As Treacher writes:

Look, man, if you want to let the president of the United States get assassinated because you were scared of being blackballed as a bigot, be my guest.

But you can’t make us turn a blind eye. We see you.

P.S. Okay, I was right: Herczeg used to be a cop in Dallas, and in 2016 she sued the department for $1 million over “gender bias.” And then she blackmailed her way into the Secret Service.

At the Corner, Luther Ray Abel adds: Unfit Female Agent Responsible for Secret Service Ruckus.

How Herczeg came to be in the vice president’s employ after such an experience is an open question, as security for the president and those in his orbit are expected to have spotless backgrounds and years of experience. It’s fair to wonder if the Secret Service’s signing on to the 30×30 initiative, a pledge to have 30 percent of all law enforcement women by 2030, could have forced the qualification of Herczeg when her record was below the level expected of male officers.

The Left, for all its fearmongering about white supremacists and January 6 rioters lurking in ponds and mulberry bushes, does not take seriously just how dangerous the world is. Anyone who understands the number of unwell and hostile entities in the world and has any status at all would think it best to surround himself with excellent protection, regardless of the color or genitalia of his security. But the president and vice president think signaling their virtue through manning, however unqualified and distracted the component parts of their security might be, is the best course for their purposes.

Better dead than rude, to coin a phrase.

UPDATE (FROM GLENN): Maybe by denying RFK Jr. Secret Service protection, they’re actually trying to protect him. . .

REPORT FROM THE BLUE ZONES: Secret Service Opened Fire on Three Thugs in Front of Biden’s Granddaughter’s Home.

Crime, and carjackings specifically, is so out of control in Washington, D.C. that this wouldn’t even be a story if there was not a connection to the president’s granddaughter. As of late October, more than 800 carjackings were reported this year. That is more than double the number reported in 2022. Juvenile crime is a big problem. 64 percent of carjacking arrests involve juveniles.

Last week an armed 17-year-old was arrested for carjacking. Instead of cracking down on theft and carjackings, D.C. officials were busy passing out air tags to residents so that if their vehicle was stolen they might be able to track its whereabouts. Unreal.

So, in this Democrat-run city, the car thieves are running loose because the Secret Service not only missed the shot that was taken at one of them, but the three got away. It’s disturbing that they got away but even more disturbing that the Secret Service agent missed the shot.

The Secret Service is not the organization we used to think it was.
