OPEN THREAD: Don’t disappoint me.

FLORIDA: “Florida Democrats nominated Andrew Gillum, the Tallahassee mayor, and Republicans tapped Representative Ron DeSantis for governor Tuesday, setting the stage for a ferocious general election in the country’s largest swing state between one of President Trump’s most unabashed allies and an outspoken progressive who would be Florida’s first black governor.”

DISPATCHES FROM THE EDUCATION APOCALYPSE: Ma’am, You Owe Tamarion Wilson An Apology.

Wilson’s fifth grade teacher at North East Carolina Preparatory School actually made him write “ma’am” over 100 times spread out over four columns on a piece of notebook paper, after he called her the m-word. Maybe there are some additional piece of news to this story that haven’t come to light, but at least based on initial details, as Rod Dreher writes, “Where on earth was this teacher from? Teaching children to say ‘sir’ and ‘ma’am’ to adults is deeply embedded in Southern culture. It chaps my backside that she humiliated that little boy for being courteous. If she doesn’t want to be called “ma’am,” she should go teach Yankees.”

Heh.™

NEW YORK’S OTHER NEW SOCIALIST “IT GIRL” ALSO CONTINUES TO PAY DIVIDENDS: Yid With Lid’s Modest Proposal: Let Julia Salazar Take The Blame.

It’s hard to believe she converted in 2012 as based on her tweets she was still “praising Jesus” in September of 2012. Are we to believe that sometime during the last three months of that year she had an epiphany, and this heavy-duty Catholic decided to become a card-carrying Jew. Maybe she went to a Jewish friend’s house for Rosh Hashana dinner and came to the conclusion that any faith that combines brisket and a million carbs is the one for her.  But I doubt it.

Heh. Make yourself a nice plate of noodle kugel and read the whole thing.

PAST PERFORMANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF FUTURE RESULTS:

● Shot: “[ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro] recently said he thinks the biggest misperception of ESPN is that it is political, and now he is putting action behind his words. Though the network’s on-air programming is mostly apolitical, it is hard to ask viewers to disassociate stances they read on social media when ESPN personalities are on TV, radio or writing for its website.”

—The New York Post, Saturday.

● Chaser: ESPN Questions Tiger Wood’s Blackness, Calls Him Stupid For Not Ripping Trump.

—Clay Travis, Outkick the Coverage, today.

Like Trump’s swamp draining in DC, Pitaro has his work cut out for him, if he actually does wish to return the channel to its apolitical glory days.

MAYBE NOT ALWAYS BORN THAT WAY? An untenured researcher at Brown University conducted a study of “rapid-onset gender dysphoria.” In it, she asked questions of the parents of teens and young adults who suddenly identified as transgender (after no previous history of such).  About 21% of those parents reported that their children had one or more friends who became transgender at around the same time, 20% reported an increase in their child’s social media use around the same time; and 45% reported both. The Left went berserk.   Brown University, which had published an article about the study in its news notes, caved and issued an apology.

IF IT WERE RUSSIA, THE SCREAMS WOULD BE UNBEARABLE: A refreshingly honest Op/Ed moment at The Washington Post, where a former political prisoner rightly (IMHO) chides Google for being evil a.f. and cozying up to China.

In prison I labored secretly for months to secure a forbidden shortwave radio, which I kept hidden in a used milk carton. I listened to programs like Voice of America and Radio Free Asia at night while wrapped under my quilt, the speaker pressed close to my ear at the lowest possible volume. Having had my freedom denied me by the Chinese Communist Party, the news of this upstart tech company risking lost revenue to do the right thing gave me real hope […] And then came news about Google’s work on a censored search engine (code-named “Dragonfly”). After my initial shock wore off, I found myself wondering what had occurred to cause the company to shed its defining principle in such a blatant fashion. Does Google really want to become a tool of the dictatorial communist regime?

“Don’t Be Evil?” That’s so 90’s. The fact is most of Congress and K Street are bought and paid for by China, and the more people see Putin hiding in their closet, the more China will be able to strengthen its economic, military and social engineering hegemony.

ASKING THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS: Will the messages we sent to the stars be understood?

An alien species might well find more difficulty in interpreting the audio samples, music, and images contained on the record. There are over 50 greeting messages in different languages. While the specifics of the messages are likely to be uninterpretable, they would at least convey to the listener the diversity of the creatures who created the Voyagers.

Similarly, the musical selections chosen demonstrate a wide range of human musical styles (ranging from works of Beethoven and Stravinsky to those of Chuck Berry, among others). While the lyrics of “Johnny B. Goode” are probably gibberish to an extraterrestrial, the beat and rhythm of the song would convey a tremendous amount to an alien listener.

As a psychic played by Steve Martin in a classic 1978 episode of Saturday Night Live said, predicting the next cover of Time magazine, “The four words that came to us from outer space — the FOUR words that will appear on the cover of Time Magazine next week — are: [holds up the magazine cover] ‘Send More Chuck Berry.’”

MAYBE HE’S ASHAMED: Senators Criticize Google CEO for Declining to Testify. Committee Chair Sen. Richard Burr: “Google chooses not to participate and being part of the solution. That’s a decision they made.”

Well, they’ve certainly chosen to be part of the problem.

Related: Google needs a new CEO, but dumping Sundar Pichai is not enough. “Since its 1990s heyday, Silicon Valley has transformed from an unruly collection of aggressive upstarts disrupting existing industries to a flabby collection of near-monopolies, now busy enforcing gentry-liberal norms on their employees and customers. Whether it’s censoring right-leaning political figures, or firing employees who dare say something truthful but politically incorrect, there’s not much of the old startup spirit there. These are flabby overstaffed Big Business corporations, run by their HR departments. You might find more dynamism at General Motors, these days. But worse yet, they exercise tremendous power and require tremendous trust.” And they’ve repeatedly proven themselves unworthy of that trust.

NEXT IN THE RUSH TO FEDERALIZE EVERYTHING: My colleague Marc Scribner on why a Federal ban on texting-while-driving doesn’t make a lick of sense. For instance,

Earlier government studies have repeatedly found other distractions pose a far more serious problem than phone-related distraction. According to 2010 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, cellphone distraction has barely budged as a fatal crash factor, ranked behind drivers being “lost in thought.” This has not led to calls for nationwide prohibitions on daydreaming while driving.

Give them time…
