MAMMOTH STORM SANDY PLUNGES NYC INTO DARKNESS, AP reports:

Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday by a superstorm that overflowed the city’s historic waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to nearly a million people.

Eerie photos of blacked-out Lower Manhattan have gone up on Twitter; with bridges closing for the night due to high wind conditions, some New Yorkers are wondering if they’re living out the Dark Knight Rises.

UPDATE: “If you’ve never seen what it looks like when a giant transformer blows, here you go.”

Plus dramatic photos from Ground Zero, and a Hoboken or Newark NJ Transit station.
